Summer scholarships and preparatory research school 2025
The Research Studies Board announces both partially (VMFX70-72) and fully (VMFX75) funded two-month summer scholarships for students at the Faculty of Medicine’s undergraduate and advanced programs.
The Summer Research Scholarship (VMFX70-72)
The two-month scholarship must be used for a ten-week summer research project (eight weeks of research and two weeks to prepare for the examination) within any of the courses VMFX70, VMFX71 or VMFX72, 15 credits each, during the period June-August 2025. Note that this is a two-step process and that the applicant does not need to have a supervisor or project in place at the time of the scholarship application (see information about the two steps below).
The total scholarship amount is SEK 27,000 (SEK 13,500 per month in June and July, non-taxable). The scholarships are awarded to students at all stages of their education in accordance with the criteria stated for each individual course. However, master students in their final semester are not eligible for the scholarship. If you are a bachelor student in your final year/semester, please read through the requirements for the summer courses carefully. Half the scholarship is paid for by the faculty and that the other half should be paid for by the supervisor.
Students who are non-EU / EEA citizens must pay tuition fees.

Summer Research Projects 2025 (Canvas learning platform)
The applicant does not need to have a supervisor at the time of the scholarship application. Applicants will be informed about the scholarship decision by email on 2025-02-17.
The application to one of the summer courses is made by submitting a project plan. Please note that all students must, on their own, find a project and a supervisor. Students must also meet the entry requirements as stated in the course syllabi.
Only students admitted to a programme at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University, are eligible to apply.

The project plan is uploaded in the learning platform Canvas (please see link above).
The supervisor must co-fund 50% of the scholarship. When the student and the supervisor have agreed on a suitable project, the student writes a project plan with support from the supervisor.
Please note: All applicants can not be financed. If your application for scholarship is not approved, you may still get admitted and registered to a summer research project course if you can find a supervisor who is willing to fund the full (100%) scholarship and submit your project plan on time in April.
Establishing such a scholarship is easier if the applicant has applied for a scholarship within this call. Therefore, we encourage students to apply if you consider doing a project during the summer 2025.
The Preparatory Research School (VMFX75)
Students that are accepted to the course will receive a fully funded scholarship during the summer (two months) by the Faculty of Medicine. The total scholarship amount is SEK 27,000 (SEK 13,500 per month in June and July, non-taxable). The student must actively participate in the course during the spring and submit a project plan as per instructions or the scholarship will be canceled.
The course is comprised of two components. The first component runs during the spring semester and has recurrent meetings in the evenings (corresponding to two weeks of full-time studies). The second component includes a ten-week summer research project (eight weeks of research and two weeks to prepare for the examination). The summer research project is examined by a written extended abstract and a poster presentation at the end of the summer.
Most of the sessions during the spring semester are scheduled during evenings (starting around 18:00). Different themes will be introduced such as pitch talk, ethics and scientific methods. The course is based on lectures, seminars and active participation of students.
Students who are non-EU / EEA citizens must pay tuition fees.
The applicant does not need to have a supervisor at the time of the scholarship application.

The application is closed for the 2025 admission round.
Entry requirements: To be admitted to the course, students must have 90 credits within their major, a 15-credit independent research project (such as summer scholarship or bachelor thesis) and be a current student at the Faculty of Medicine at Lund University. Note, if you haven't performed an independent research project previously you should apply for a regular summer scholarship first.
If your application for Preparatory Research School is not approved, you can choose to be transferred to the summer scholarship group (VMFX70-72).
Information about the project plan and procedures will be shared during the first part of the course.
More information
- Be concise, the reviewers read many applications. A precise and brief statement is preferred.
- Research merits are important. You apply in competition with other students, all merits related to research as well as extra curriculum courses are important. Activities that have no impact on your future research career are less important.
- Try to briefly motivate why you should be given a scholarship. This is extra important if you at the time of application have no research experience.
